Matthew Chan | Principal

Matt is a strategy specialist with 20 years’ hands-on business experience across financial services, consumer and B2B brands, government, technology, and capital markets middle and back office operations and infrastructure.  In his professional life, he has led and transformed teams in the UK, Asia and Australia responsible for growing businesses across diverse locations and cultures.

Prior to Rainhoffer Advisory, Matt was Executive Director at the US Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation, managing the company’s Omgeo/Institutional Trade Processing businesses across Asia Pacific, servicing 600 financial services clients in 16 countries.  Prior to that, in London, Matt managed M&A and the commercialisation of new business streams for Omgeo before moving to Asia as the region’s Marketing Director.

Before moving into financial services, Matt worked in corporate strategy at Cadbury Schweppes in London, and in corporate planning at PepsiCo International.  From 1999 to 2001, Matt worked in Canberra as a business adviser to Australia’s finance minister overseeing government business enterprises (GBEs) and asset sales and, prior to that, as an engineering consultant specialising in hydrology, environmental sustainability and utility infrastructure.

Matt is a graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD) and called upon regularly to share his views on strategy development, evolving technology, regulation and governance in financial services. He is passionate about business strategy and performance, business engagement with Asia, fostering diversity and inclusion, and working with not-for-profits and startups.

He is based in Sydney, with his partner and two children.

A BUSINESS THINKER AND COMMUNICATOR OF IDEAS, in recent years Matt has been sharing ideas on financial services technology, operations and compliance, business disruption, international regulation and market developments in Asia Pacific.  He has been quoted, interviewed and written op-eds on challenges and opportunities in financial markets, including China’s emergence as an international destination for investment flows, cybersecurity and resiliency, the need for consistent technology regulation and platform interoperability, and the efficiency and risk management benefits of automation in back office processes – a pioneering topic he commissioning a landmark benchmark study on as far back as 2013, and has sharing his ideas on since.
